Good morning, this is Jason Dolliver the Superintendent of Pender Public Schools.
As you likely know, the highways and roads in the Pender Public School District are experiencing a lot of water related issues. There are a lot of places where water has flooded roads, and there are lots of places that are very muddy. These issues and others are making travel very difficult. The forecast is calling for quite a bit more rain and some snow over the next 24 - 36 hours. Snow that fell throughout the winter will also continue to melt. In other words, the road conditions likely won’t improve throughout the course of the day. All PPS students are accounted for, meaning they are either here or at home with their family. That said, families are encouraged to do what they feel is best for their specific situation. Families that feel it is best to get their children home now should do so. Those that are comfortable leaving them in school throughout the day should do so. Again, families should make decisions based on what is best for their specific situation.
Travel at the end of the school day could be very difficult or even impossible for busses. It may be necessary for parents of students that ride the bus to pick up their children from school rather than sending them home via bus. As the day progresses, PPS personnel will communicate with families that utilize bussing services. Parents and family members should start to plan now for end of the school day transportation.
This is a very unique weather event, and I apologize for any inconveniences that are happening as a result. PPS will continue to do everything possible to keep all students safe. As of right now, school will be dismissed as planned at 2:30 pm. If that changes, you will be notified immediately.
Feel free to contact school personnel if you have any questions, concerns, or requests.
Thanks and have a great day!
