Mrs. Brown, Fourth Grade
By Bryce Robertson and Nakyya Eason
We had recently talked with Mrs Brown. and we asked her many questions about her job. One of the questions was why did she want to teach 4th grade. Her response was "I knew I wanted to be a teacher, and actually began college thinking I wanted to teach high school English. However I had an opportunity to help in an elementary classroom and was instantly 'hooked'. I have worked wit other age levels but the 4th grade was my favorite". Another question was what is your favorite subject to teach.Mrs. Brown replied " I enjoy teaching history, social studies, and English, I also love writing and reading too". The third question we asked was What do you think is the student's favorite part of the year? Mrs. Brown's answer was "Students seem to like any big topic or project they can be part of. It is neat to watch individual students latch onto new material or new ideas and get excited to learn more. The students always get very motivated when we learn about the Oregon Trail and Pioneers, covered wagons, Voyage of the Mimi, whales and The Lewis and Clark Expedition. Personally, I love to read to my students and always hope they remember some of the books we've shared; Seven Alone, Where's Willie and Island of the Blue Dolphins." For the fourth question we asked, Have you taken students on any field trips this year? In response Mrs. Brown said, "fourth graders get the special excitement and opportunity to visit the most magnificent building in the state when we tour the Nebraska capitol. It is wonderful to be an adult with them when they see it for the first time. We visited Lincoln last month and toured the Nebraska State Historical Museum and Morrill Hall, as well as the capitol. Mrs. Brown has taught 37 years as of spring 2010 and says it still isn't long enough.
