Alumni Questions

What were some of the classes that you took in high school?

When I was in high school, we took World Geography, American History, four years of English, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Home Economics, Typing (no computer) Biology I and II, Chemistry, Spanish was started as a foreign language.

What were the sports/activities like during your high school career?

Girls sports were not organized as they are now. They were more of an after school activity for fun. I remember the boys basketball team had a perfect year! They didn't win any games (1967-1968). The Future Homemakers of America (FHA) was a big organization for girls. All girls joined Pep Club.

What advice would you give to the upcoming class of 2008?

Enjoy your time in high school and take as many challenging classes as you can. Remember, the U.S. is only a small part of this world. Get to meet as many people from different backgrounds as you can to broaden your ideas. There are so many opportunities for you. Go for it!

Do you have any special memories regarding what was happening historically during that time?

The Vietnam War was being fought and divided the country. We saw many horrible war stories on the news. The Civil Rights marches were happening. I remember hearing Martin Luther King was shot while listening to the radio. It was a horrible shock. President Johnson decided not to run for President. It was a very uneasy time in America in 1968.

Do you have any special memories you would like to share about your days at PHS?

We had some great teachers at Pender High School. Mr Bessert taught World Geo., which I loved. R.C. Anderson made literature very interesting. Mr. Lawbor made Government important in our lives. I also dated my future husband, Bill Hoppner!
