DRAGONS HIT THE HARDWOOD

Open With Wakefield/Tekamah-Herman

by Daniel Kent

On November 29 and 30, the Pender Pendragon basketball team opened the season with a trip to Wakefield and invited Tekamah-Herman to town. The Dragons fell to Wakefield, 61-53, but bounced back against the Tigers, winning 45-39.

In Wakefield, the Dragons scoring leader was Connor Heise with 19 points. Matt Smith was second behind Connor H. with 14 points. The most generous player of the night was Grant Fillipi with three assists. Leading in rebounds was Josh Beutler with 14 rebounds. Defensively, the Dragons were led by Connor H. in steals, who had four, and Josh B. in blocks, with one. It was from the line, though, that cost the Dragons the game, hitting only three out of 15 from the stripe.

Against the Tigers, the Dragons turned to defense to help pull them out of their offensive slump. The Dragons pulled down 48 boards (15 of those on offense) with Josh B. reeling in 22 of them. This helped him tie the record for most rebounds in one game (1992, Jason Tonjes, Osmond). Josh B. was also the leading scorer of the game with 12 points. Eric Doht came in behind Josh B. with nine. The thief of the game was Matt S. with three steals. The assist leader for Pender against the Tigers was Connor H. with two assists. The line was a bit more generous to the Dragons than it was against Wakefield. Pender hit 15-31.

Pender takes a trip down to Oakland this Friday to battle the O-C Knights. The Dragons would love to see anyone and everyone there to cheer the basketball team onto victory.
