Alumni Questions

What were some of the classes that you took in high school?

Freshman: Algebra, English, Latin I, Art, and Ethics,. It taught us how to introduce people, open doors for ladies first, remove hats or caps inside, how to set a table and what silver(wear) should be used. I'm sure that would go over even today.

Sophomores: Geometry, Latin II, English or Grammar, and History.

Juniors: Typing I, Shorthand, and History.

Senior: Typing II and Biology

What were the sports/activities like during your high school career?

Boys: Football, Basketball, Track.

Girls: GAA-Girls Athletic Association

All were after school. Had Junior and Senior plays which were had in our Study Hall. The class had parties and debate.

What advice would you give to the upcoming class of 2008?

More respect to your teachers and fellow students. Do your best and graduate. The more education you have, the better chance of a good life. I was lucky enough to go to a year and a summer to Wayne State. I taught four years and then after a number of years I went back to college and taught 19 more years. Now you have to have a B.A. in order to teach. Some taught right after graduation from high school.

Do you have any special memories regarding what was happening historically during that time?

My years in high school was during very hard times. It was during a drought. There were only 3 things you could do after graduation. I was being a teacher office assistant or stenographer or housekeeper, or get married. Some fellows joined the army or navy. This was during W.P.A.

Do you have any special memories you would like to share about your days at PHS?

They had class parties. One I really remember took place in November and our lunch was pumpkin pie and whipped cream. We happened to be in the room where the school board had their cars parked below. Someone got the big idea and dropped pie out the window on to the cars. Our punishment was to bring a penny to have the boards' cars be washed. That's how it was in hard times.

We had Juniors-Seniors Banquets in a school room which Juniors had to decorate. Our Mothers prepared our dinner and Sophomores served.

We had a class of 34 - At our 60th year reunion we had 22 living. Since our reunion we have lost 3 members as far as I know.
