JUNIORS TAKE PSAT
by Matthew Hansen
On October 17, the junior class took the PSAT in the Multi Purpose Room. The PSAT is a test to prepare students for the SAT, which most of them will take as a senior. The PSAT is also a qualifying test for National Merit Scholarships and Letters of Commendation. The PSAT is scored in three different areas: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. Each section is worth between 20 and 80 points.
The Math section is multiple-choice and grid-in questions. It is a 50-minute section. There are some higher level math questions, but there are not any quantitative comparisons.
The Critical Reading is also a multiple-choice, 50-minute long section. The Writing portion of the PSAT is multiple-choice but is only 30-minutes long.
The test takes about two hours and ten minutes. The PSAT is taken in October of the students' junior year. Also, one can take a PSAT in October of the sophomore year.
One can register to take the PSAT at one's high school or community. Scores are available by December.
