ONE RAIN, ONE SHINE--KAYCI ALLEN TO STATE!
District Golf
by Matthew Hansen
The girls' golf team left Pender on Tuesday morning at 6:15 a.m. with a complimentary breakfast from Popo's Julie Christiansen. The Golf team drove in the rain, thunder, and lightning all the way. Upon arrival at Eagle Hills Golf Club in Papillion they prepared for golfing in the rain. All of the girls were prepared for the elements-but they were not too happy to be golfing in the rain. Kayci Allen and Alaynna H. both started golfing in a down pour. Kayci finished one hole and started the second-while Alaynna started the first hole. Then the golf director deemed the course unplayable (in Mrs. VonSeggern's opinion the greens were flooded). The golfers were in a rain delay. Around 10:30 a.m. the rain quit-the director decided to call the state for options. They were offered to play a nine-hole tournament on Tuesday afternoon or they could return on Wednesday for an 18-hole tournament. The state director decided at noon that the golf course was still too wet and that the golf girls should return on Wednesday the 3rd.
The next day the girls returned to Papillion with a complimentary doughnut breakfast from Bob Rainer. This time they were able to drive in clear skies and sunshine. Kayci A. did extremely well on the front nine; however, the back nine was more difficult and caused her score to rise. On the first nine she shot a 44 and on the back a 55 for a total of 99. She was still able to place 7th and she qualified for the state tournament that will be on October 8 and 9 in Grand Island at the Riverside Golf Course. Kayci will tee off on October 8 at 10:10 a.m.
Alaynna H. golfed a 62 on both the front and back 9 for a total of 124. Megan shot a 58 on the front nine. Then she faced the treacherous back nine- she scored a 64 to total 122.
Pender shot a 494 which gave them 7th in the ranking of 11 teams.
