Once again, the Pender Pendragons have been co-oped with the Wisner-Pilger Lady Gators for softball. The team contest of 3 seniors, 3 juniors, 3 sophomores 10 freshmen (4 from Pender), 6 student managers (2 from Pender), and 6 Coaches (Karrie Bodwell, Duane Mendlik, Samantha Johnson, Ronda Ras, Rebecca Fischer, and Eric Miller). Here is an overall outlook for this year’s softball season from Coach Samantha Johnson. This season will look to be a growing season in most aspects. We are a young team with half of our roster being Freshman. We had a couple spots to fill with graduating seniors as well as injuries. The younger girls have had to step up in more ways than one to fill those holes. The girls will face a lot of good competition over the season. Most of the teams we get to play are teams that made it to the State Tournament last year and always have strong programs. We hope to grow to be that caliber of the team throughout the season and play every game to the best of our ability. The future is very bright for our program!

Football By: Vanessa and Sam The Pendragon football team coached by Andy Welsh has 20 members on the team. Seven seniors, five juniors, 4 sophomores, and four freshmen are off to a one and one start this season. The team also consists of two other coaches Brock Simonsen and Matt Heineman. The student managers this year are Reece Heineman, Logan Harral, Tayt Welsh, and Andrew Duncan. We talked to the coach Andy Welsh about what he thinks the season should pertain. Welsh said, “We have the potential to play with anyone in the state because of our athleticism and our upperclassmen lead team, but with that we need to play our best game to win any game this season.” Welsh also talked about the post season time where he said, “We should definitely be a playoff football team and we have a team that should be able to advance in the playoffs for the first time in several years.” We should all look forward to the season and our football team.

Our school looks a little different since we came back in August. According to Head Maintenance person, Tony Crippen, over the summer there were many renovations or new additions to the school. The Jr. High locker room were redone, we got a new roof on the science, elementary and multipurpose rooms, new carpet was placed by the entrance of door 16 and also in a few class rooms in the secondary. A new fence was put around the football field and we also redid our new Tech Coordinator’s office. We also had a moment to visit with Superintendent Jason Dolliver about the new things as far as technology. The biggest thing would be the chrome books for the students in grades 4-6. It will give them a chance to use different resources in the classroom. It will be interesting to see how teachers will use them to enhance student learning in the classroom. The other change was that 7th and 8th graders changed from Mac books to using the Chromebooks. We have a full-time technology director in the building this year, also. Jennifer Davis will be filling that position. She will be a great resource for students and teachers alike.

As a reminder, in order for students to participate in the activities planned for August 21 when the solar eclipse occurs, the letter mailed to parents on August 3, 2017 must be signed and turned in. This is an extremely unique opportunity, and we hope to make the most of it. Parents are more than welcome to attend the eclipse activities in Pender at Heyne Field for K-3rd and 9th-12th grade students. Since 4th-8th grade students are traveling to Lincoln for the eclipse, parent participation is unfortunately not possible. There are risks associated with participation in the solar eclipse activities. Parents are encouraged to carefully consider whether or not it is appropriate for their child or children to participate. Again, in order for students to participate, the letter sent to parents on August 3, 2017 must be signed and returned to the school. Thank you and please contact school personnel for more information or if you have any questions.
